Finding the perfect hairdresser is a nightmare. Getting someone to cut and/or colour your hair requires a certain level of trust and chemistry. If you hairdresser fails to understand what you are asking them then there is only one end to the story: a Hairtrostophe.
Some of you might lean
back in their chair and can consider themselves lucky enough not to be faced
with such a #firstworldproblem. But hopefully someone can relate. Yes, it is
only hair and it will grow, but it is also difficult to hide a terrible haircut
or colour gone wrong. Trust me, I have been there.
Flashback to 2012: back
then I was in a quite happy hairdresser-customer relationship with Amanda from
a popular chain high street hairdresser. She was charming, loud, and had a bosom
that could double as a fatal weapon.
One fatal day in November,
she decided that copper highlights were the answer to me wanting to be a bit
more ginger. It was Friday, I was her last appointment of the day and I had a
weekend in the countryside with my best friend to look forward to.
And thank god for that. I
left the salon at about 8.30pm via the backdoor looking like a ginger skunk. My
best friend laughed and thankfully her dogs didn’t mind the awfulness that was
my hair at this point.
Over the course of the
weekend I washed my hair more times than I like to remember in the hopes that
it would get better. It didn’t. So I rang and asked for it to be fixed. On monday
morning, I did the walk of shame, covered in huge scarf, sunnies and a hat.
There was bleach and lots of it.
After this trauma (I
know, I know... girly first world stuff), I promised myself to do my research
and avoid such damaging visits to both my hair and my wallet in the future.
That is how Taylor Taylor, Amy and Gemma came into my life.
Recommended as one of the
best salons in town – and having made a cameo appearance on Made in Chelsea as
its claim to fame – I went it for a consultation before making my first
appointment.
Situated in trendy
Shoreditch in a beautiful old building, Taylor Taylor is just a charming and
gorgeous salon. Big, airy upstairs rooms with vintage mirrors, a bar and ultimately
the friendliest staff I have ever come across. I fell in love with the look of
the place, and though that says very little about the quality of services they
provide, it is nice to find oneself in beautiful surroundings while having to
sit still for a while.
I handed an espresso
martini on my first visit – I am a sucker for an espresso martini – and Amy got
to work. By now I am utterly in love with this girl: stunning, bubbly and such
fun Amy and I always spend our hour together chatting about life, London, juice
and food in general. A shared obsession with food is always good grounds to
establish a trusting relationship with your hairdresser. Aside from the fact
that Amy knows when I need another martini, or some almonds, or indeed a pep
talk, she also manages to do a brilliant job with my locks.
Gemma, my actual
hairdresser, is similarly lovely has always had me leaving the salon with a
bright smile on my face. I have recommended both to my friends; N. even went as
far as saying that “my hair has never been this nice!” If thats not a satisfied
customer then I am not sure what is.
Their cocktails are
fantastic and I am a particular fan of their washing station. I mean, look at
all those shiny stones! It should be pretty apparent by now that I love all
things shiny – glitter, jewellery and now can add gold-tiled walls to my list.
There are two salons in East London (close to Liverpool and Shoreditch Hight Street Stations); if you are a West Londoner and dread venturing East then you are in luck as there is also now a Taylor Taylor in Notthing Hill.
In conclusion, if you are
willing to invest some time and money into your hair then I would
wholeheartedly recommend Taylor Taylor for an experience that will satisfy your
hair, your eyes and your taste buds. If you are a bit short of cash, they have
some offers available – check out their website and app for more information.
(And say hi to Gemma and Amy if you go and see them!) You can also follow them on Twitter and Facebook.
